John Nelson at Ye (Tobacco Roll), 1664
Obv: IOHN NELSON AT YE = Tobacco roll
Rev: IN SOVTHWARK 1664 = I N
BW 71, Norweb 4825, Everson 483.
Very Fine and attractive. Extremely rare. Ex Hayward collection.
This is the specimen illustrated in Everson. There was no example in the Danehower collection, and the present specimen is finer than those in the British Museum and Museum of London.
The obv. bears an excellent representation of the "tobacco roll" sign. According to Larwood & Hotten's History of Signboards (1866), the sign represented "coils of the so-called spun or twist tobacco, otherwise pigtail, for the sake of ornament, painted brown and gold alternately".
